Do You Have Succession Planning On Your Mind?

Updated: Jan 23, 2022

We’ve known for years that there would be a talent shortage when Baby Boomers started retiring. Lisa Chubinsky’s recent presentation to the Adhesive and Sealant Council’s Annual Conference entitled, Did You Know That 7 Baby Boomers Retire Every Minute? illustrated some of these issues. Most studies show that many of the Boomers plan to work beyond the traditional 65-year mark, and so the assumption had been that this would lessen the impact. But the recent COVID-19 pandemic has changed everything. Not only are Boomers retiring on time, but they’re also retiring early!

Recent numbers are showing that in 2020, more than 3 million Boomers left the workforce. That’s well over 1M retirements than normal.

We’re also starting to see early retirements of the first Gen X’ers, which means that seasoned Chemists, Scientists and Engineers are leaving the workforce much faster than anticipated.

But that’s not all. Boomers had fewer children than previous generations and that trend is continuing with Gen Xers and Millennials. The declining workforce is only one issue that’s putting pressure on companies that hire Chemists, Scientists and Engineers. The other issue is that the US economy is poised to grow significantly over the next several years. A growing economy is wonderful and it’s increasing the demand for more workers.
